Erik Gustavus Aspeling

START FEB 16/2007 ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

There is no doubt that the progenitor of the Aspeling family in South Africa, Erik Gustavus Aspeling, came to the Cape of Good Hope from Sweden. Where exactly in Sweden has been not easy to confirm.
According to Malherbe, in his book Family Register of the South African Nation, Erik Gustavus Aspeling arrived in South Africa in 1758 from Leerbeck, Sweden. Heese,J.A. in South African Genealogies, states that he arrived from Sweden in the ship Vlietlust and that he was a Coppersmith by trade. Hodge, John also states that he came from Leerbeck in Sweden as did Pama in his book Heraldry of South African Families. In addition De Villiers and Pama also states that he came from Leerbeck. A fellow researcher Anthony Robert Aspeling also claims that Leerbeck Sweden is where Erik Gustavus comes from. In a very old document, a will, at the Cape Archives he is noted as coming from Leerbeck and that he was a Burgher at the Cape. In this document his parents are Gustavus Aspeling and Breeta Taalberg as residing in Leerbek, Sweden. (See photo of original will and translation)

However the Rev John (Jack) Louis Wills Aspeling who got me started on all this genealogy some twenty years ago, sent me his original data sheet that stated and I quote "Die Stamvader van hierdie familie was ERIK GUSTAVUS ASPELING, van Uddevale, wat in Kaapstad met Hillegonda Coetsee in die huwelik getree het." Well he committed the cardinal sin of not referencing this "fact" Me, being wet behind the ears never challenged him. After all he was a minister and my uncle. Uncle Jack passed on in 1996 and now only God knows where he got the information. But he may not have been too far off. In the list of members at the Evangelical Lutheran Church on Strand Street in Cape Town Erik Gustavus was on the first page (1780) so one presumes he was one of the early members. He was listed with his son Dirk Jacobus (a young man) In this list it notes that he was either from Oskerson or Askerson,(not easy to decipher) Sweden. Askersund is the nearest town to Lerback (70 Km) So it makes sense that he stated that he was from Lerback (Leerbek).
Thanks to Stella Sutherland for this important information.
From Stella Sutherland's notes: "There is a parish named Lerback under Askersunds kommun/municipal, in Orebro Lan/county in Narke province. I could not find any information that records were lost in a fire, some HFL/clerical surveys for the late 1700 are defect (no cause mentioned), 1815-20 are damaged caused by damp, some early 1700 books of birth are lost (www.nad.ra.se sok i NAD / type seeked parish, sok=search Lerback parish records are archived by Uppsala Landsarkiv, you could contact them and ask for specific time, like if birth records for this man's birthyear and clerical surveys are availble and get an accurate answer. http://www.ra.se/la.html.

UDDEVALLA is the largest city in Bohuslän (province) with 50 000 inhabitants. The city dates from ancient times, with the oldest preserved letters of privilege being from 1498. However, due to two large fires, the buildings date only back to the late 19th century, for example the Town hall and the church.

Uddevalla, with an active harbour, is one of the most important industrial cities on the westcoast. For decades the shipyard was Uddevallaþs main trademark with some 3 000 employees but since it went out of business in 1986, different concepts have been tried, one being a Volvo car factory, to restore the industrial life in the harbour. The Bohuslän Museum is located downtown, just next to Bäveån (the Bäve stream). Enter free of charge and discover the history of the province through the many life-size displays. There is an art exhibition as well, displaying the works of well-known artists.
!There are daily boat trips heading for the coast and for different islands. Please check with the tourist office, located on the opposite side of Bäveån, seen from the Museum. Just south of the city, you will find Gustafsberg, which is Sweden's oldest seaside health resort, dating back back to the 18th century. The rich and famous of the era gathered here to enjoy salty baths as well as clay and kelp baths. The wooden bathtubs are still around and so is "Villa Carolina", an empire style summer mansion, with 18th century interiors.
!So with much apology to all the genalogists that I have missled over this issue lets forget about Uddevale and concentrate on Leerbeck. although I must admit, Uddevalle sounds like a nice place but I am not going there!

Depending what documents one is reading Erik Gustavus's names are spelt Erick; Gustaaf;Gustaeff Aspling; Aspelink,

The family Crest of the Aspeling family is a Swan. Ref. Pama, C. Heraldry of South African Families. It is interesting to note the the Lutheran Church on Strand Street in Cape Town is replete with images of a swan. There is a very interesting story as to why the Swan is so important to the church and is in their booklet." The swan recurs inside and outside the Church and on the facade of Martin Melck House is one of the emblems of Luther. Traditionally it derives from John Huss who, dying at the stake just 100 years before the birth of Luther is said to have prophestied (punning on his own name which means "goose" " You are killing a goose but a swan will come" More authoritatvely however, it appears there is no satisfactory explanation for its connection with Luther" See the scrapbook for Erik Gustavus Aspeling on www.aspeling.com and for photographs of the booklet and the church which has played an important part of our heritage.
!I wonder why he took the Swan as the Family Crest. Could it be that the Lutheran Church was banned by the Dutch East India Company and the swan became a secret symbol for him.

There are many references to his profession.
!"Erik Gustavus Aspeling arrived as a soldier in the service of the V.O.C. at the Cape in 1758 on board the the Vlietlust from Leerbeck, Sweden. He was a coppersmith, but shortly after his arrival he was appointed by the V.O.C. as a maker of gun bases in Stellenbosch" ref Family Register. Old Swellendam Families Part 2 Marena van Hemert
!Quote from The Cape Copper Smith by Marius Le Roux p.79 -80

(His son was also a coppersmith. see Hendricus Leonardus)

Married Hillegonda Kotze in 1766. (It should be noted in very early documents she is sometimes refered to as Coetzee).

Het land van herkomst van de familie Aspeling (Aspelink) is Zweden. De oudst bekende stamvader Erik Gustavus liet in zijn scheepssoldijrol van het schip 'Vlietlust’ noteren dat hij uit Leerbeek kwam. The descendants of Erik Gustavus we find in South-Africa and from the beginning of the nineteenth century in India, on which branch the accent lies in this genealogy. Translation of above to English Cloppenburg

This seal covers the included mutual estate of the burgher Erich Gustavus Aspeling and his spouse sub dato 17 July 1767 compiled on my behalf.
LSF

On this day 17 July 1767 there appeared before me, Lucas Sigismundus Faber, sworn clerk in the Secretariat of Justice of this Government in the presence of the witnesses named hereafter, the burgher Erich Gustavus Aspeling of Leerbek in Sweden and Hillegonda Cotzee of the Cape of Good Hope,a married couple known to me, sworn Clerk and witnesses, healthy in body in our estimation, in possession of all their senses, who, wishing to dispose of their possessions, do so of their own free will, without persuasion by anyone.

After revoking all foregoing wills, codicils or other statements of this nature of which they might have been testators, together or separately; they stated that from mutual singular love and affection shown over and over, the first to die and the surviving one of them both be nominated and instituted as his or her sole and entire heir or heiress, of the entire estate, moveable as well as immovable, present and future, none excluded, to be used and occupied as own and intended by the surviving spouse, provided nevertheless that the surviving spouse will be obliged and held to it that a child or children who might be born of their marriage to each other be brought up honestly and in a Christian manner until they come of age, marry or reach other approved state, when they must be given such an amount as inheritance from father or mother as it is proper to do, depending on the state of the estate. Should the surviving spouse wish to remarry however, before the marriage can be solemnized, he or she must choose and appoint two decent and irreproachable men as guardians of everything pertaining to the children’s inheritance. However, the portion of those not yet come of age must remain under the surviving spouse until [the] above mentioned, being the express will and wish of the testators that the surviving spouse must remain in full possession of these estates, in order to educate and feed them in the usu trust for their inheritances.

In the event that the testators die without offspring, the testator leaves to his parents the burgher Gustavus Aspeling and Breeta Taalberg formerly residing in Leerbek, as well as the testatrix to her father Dirk Cotzee the elder, each the legitimate portion of their children’s estate to which they are entitled under the law.

And whilst the testators appoint each other as executor or executrix of these wills, as well as guardian of their possible offspring, they wish to seclude from their will all officials or magistrates who on behalf of their officers could or would interfere with this will or children and in particular the Masters of the Orphan Chamber of this city, who for their pains taken on their behalf otherwise, they thank their Honours.

Which foregoing having been read word for word clearly and distinctly to the testators, they declared it to be their last and final will, wishing it validated as will, codicil, death gratuity or as it best exists under the law, in spite of any solemn omission, is herewith ensured, imploring the utmost benevolence of the judges.

The testators stated to me, sworn Clerk, pursuant to the estimated seal ordinance, their express wish that this estate not be imported 6000 guilders.
Thus attested at the Cape of Good Hope on the above date, month and year in the presence of the clerks Pieter Caspar Broedersz: and Henricus Jacobus Storm as witnesses in good faith.

As witnesses: P:C: Broedersz:, H:J: Storm
Erick Gstaf Aspling

Genealogical Record Aspeling

dr L.M. van der Hoevand

Introduction

Sweden is the country of origin of the Aspeling (Aspelink) family. The first known ancestor Erik Gustavus let it be noted in his wage record on the vessel 'Vlietlust’ that he came from Leerbeek. Other sources cite Uddevella as place of origin. Leerbeek appears to be a bastardisation of Lärabok, where Aspelings are still living today. Uddevalla is situated above Göteborg on the Skagerarak, a straight between Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

We find the descendants of Erik Gustavus in South Africa and from the beginning of the nineteenth century in India, which branch is accentuated in this genealogy. Due to limited reference material it could not be determined precisely how the South African branch fits together. In contrast an excellent picture emerged of the Indian branch of the family.

I. Erik Gustavus (Gustaff, Gustaeff) Aspeling (Aspelink), of Leerbeek (Sweden), as a soldier on the vessel 'Vlietvlust' of the VOC Chamber Amsterdam to Cape of Good Hope 1757,[1] armourer there (1759-1760),[2] later copper-smith, requested citizenship of the Cape of Good Hope (1764),[3] died 2 Aug. 1792, married in Cape Town Hillegonde Kotze, baptized at the Cape of Good Hope 5 December 1745,[4] daughter of Dirk Kotze, burgher at Drakenstein,[5] and Maria Magdalena Castens. Erik and Hillegonde made a will in 1767 at the Cape of Good Hope.[6]

BIOGRAPHY: He was a general agent

Her family first came to the Cape of Good Hope in 1691, a mere 39 years after Jan Van Riebeek arrived at the Cape on 6th April to set up a refreshment station for the VOC's (Dutch East India Company) ships so they could obtain meat, vegetables, water and other essentials. The progenitor of the Kotzee family in South Africa came from Germany. So I guess we all have some Swede and German genes.

Note: In very early documents she is sometimes refered to as Coetzee.

NOTES:

BIOGRAPHY:
! Robert Row was quite an entrepreneur and his business transactions are very interesting. He bought and sold property so often that it would rival todays real estate agents. One needs to read David Philip's "British Residents at the Cape 1795-1819 to fully appreciate this gentleman's acumen. In 1800 he and his wife were living in False Bay and in 1801 was asking for a renewal of a loan and for an enlarged grant. In 1803 he was intending to leave the Cape Colony but there does not seem to be any evidence that he did. Some interesting deals: " Informs the gentleman of the Army & Navy that he has fitted up a house in Barrack street as a hotel and coffee house" " Had a licence for vending foreign wine and liquors ... and threatens to prosecute those who infringe his monaply" " Row's livery stables, Barrack St, now ready to receive horses to stand at livery by day or month" While this is all going on he is buying and selling property like it is going out of style. However, the sad thing is that on 20th October 1817 he seems to gone into bankrupcy. " "20.10.17 Liquidation sale of his insolvent estate" It seems thaat he was left with wife, son, 2 daughters, 2 prize slaves, and two slaves.
