The name Hendrik Leeuwminnaar appears to be a corruption of Henry Leeuwner (which in itself is an anglicised version of Hendricus Leonard(us).The town of Uniondale was established in 1865 as a result of the unificationof Hopedale and Lyon, two towns established on the farm Rietvaleie (Olivier:1952;94).
