In 1991 the first book of an intended series about the families of Old Swellendam, Die Families van Ou Swellendam deel 1 - Steyn was published by the Drosdy Museum. This publication dealt exclusively with one family and was compiled by Marena van Hemert,then a member of the museum staff. Over a period of twelve years she researched several other families with links to Old Swellendam. Since her retirement in December 2002 she continued with this project to compile two more books in similar format. Her second book of this series has now been completed. The title is Families Registers - Old Swellendam Families Part 2 / Ou Swelledam Families Deel 2 and deal with nineteen different families. Genealogical registers are illustrated with some photographs. Additional information and background history are given in English and Afrikaans. The book has 160 pages and the different family chapters vary from two to twenty-five pages each. The registers included are: Adshade, Anderson, Ashford, van As, Aspeling, Badenhorst, Bam, Barry, Blanckenberg, Crous, Dodds, Dunn, Emmet, Kerr, Lingenfelder, Rothmann, Siebert, Stiglingh, and Tomlinson. This book is published jointly by Marena van Hemert and Roger Aspeling; the latter was responsible for most of the research on the Aspeling family. The book is sold at R80 each. Two other booklets about Swellendam's history will be presented at the same time. They were compiled by M. van Hemert after a request by Bontebok Tourism and Travel in Swellendam, who will handle the publishing and sales. The first booklet is The Execution and Other Tales About Swellendam. This is the English version of Galgkoppie en ander verhale oor Swellendam by Marena van Hemert, which was published in 1999 by the Drostdy Museum. The dramatic, poignant and humorous tales about people, who lived in Swellendam and surrounds, cover the period from 1786 to 1975. This booklet is for sale at R30. The other booklet is A Concise History of Swellendam, which is a compact and chronological account of Swellendam's history. It contains information about events concerning Swellendam and district from 1662 to 1995. The booket price is R25.
